All about gold - 1

Gold is one of the most valuable metals available and has been prized by man since the beginning of time. In addition to its use in gold coins such as sovereigns and Krugerrands, and in jewellery and ornamentation, it has a huge number of industrial uses - in computers, electronics, photography, scientific processes, dentistry and many other fields. This huge and diverse market means that we are always able to offer a good price for the gold we buy. Even when you no longer want that old gold chain, the precious metal it contains can still be put to a very good use. Its resistance to corrosion makes it eminently suitable for use in electronic connections and indeed many high end hi-fi systems use gold, or at least gold plated, connectors to ensure no loss of signal quality. This corrosion resistance has also meant that early gold artefacts have survived in perfect conditiion for many millennia despite having been buried for all that time.

As pure gold is a very soft metal, with a hardness of 2-3 on the Mohs scale (diamond is 10), it is often made harder by blending it with copper, silver, and other metals to make alloys. Silver is the most commonly used alloy metal and whereas pure gold is a bright golden yellow colour, the greater the amount of silver the whiter the colour of the alloy. The amount of gold in the alloy is measured very precisely.

Gold purity is measured in carats, also known as ct, kt, or k, and spelled karats in the US. One carat is 1/24 purity by mass so 24 carat gold is pure gold (it's actually around 99.99% pure as all gold contains a minute amount of silver). Other karat values give the percentage of gold in the alloy in 24ths with 18 carat being 18/24 or 75% purity. 9 carat gold (9/24 = 37.5% pure) is the lowest purity accepted in most countries as being gold. 9 carat gold is often used to produce mass market jewellery and its relative impurity is the reason 9 carat gold is worth much less than pure gold. We buy all types of gold though.
