Although gold does occur naturally as a native metal, most is today extracted from gold ore. Modern extraction methods involve leaching the metal from the ore using a weak cyanide solution. One ton of ore may yield less than one gram of gold and yet the process can still be cost efficient with up to 98% of the gold being successfully extracted. It's a far cry from the Gold Rush days of the Klondike when 49'ers panned for gold and could dig gold nuggets straight out of the ground.

Being extremely rare, with less than 125000 tonnes having ever been mined since the dawn of time, gold has been prized down the centuries. As it has a relatively low melting point of 1063°C, it can easily be smelted and refined. It is also the most malleable and ductile metal known and so can easily be worked to create incredibly detailed, fine, beautiful and intricate objects.

With the increased usage and accuracy of metal detectors ancient hoards of gold are still being discovered and the quality and detail of the workmanship that went into producing the items is often outstanding even by today's standards. The Anglo-Saxon hoard uncovered in 2009 has been estimated to be worth a seven figure sum today. Even now when we buy gold we're always very much aware that the precious metal may indeed have first been mined many hundreds, if not thousands, of years earlier in time.
